FAQ’s
Am I queer enough?
Yes! If you self-identify as queer than you are welcome to participate. I’m not going to verify your dating history or police your gender expression.
What’s the process?
After we shoot, you will need to send me your written statement. After I’ve received it, I’ll email you handful of selections and we decide together what works best.
What’s the prompt?
Please state your name, age, pronouns & location. Do you think you read as queer? If not, do you try make yourself visible to other queers (flagging)? If so, how? Do you have other racial, religious, ethnic or other identities that intersect with your queerness? How do they impact one another? Does your sexuality / gender expression impact how you move through the world? If you do think you are *visibly queer all the time* (you have gayface), maybe reflect on how that makes you feel in certain spaces. How have your found your friends / community / romantic partners in Los Angeles? Do you play your queerness up or down depending on the situation? Also maybe think about class, age and privilege. What’s it like to be a queer person in LA now? 2000 characters max please.
I hate writing about myself.
That’s ok! I can interview you and we can take it from there.
How can I use my photo?
You are welcome to use the final retouched image on your social media with a credit to the photographer “Lauren Tabak” / project “Queer From Here”. You’re also welcome to use it on linkedin, tinder etc - if this photo helps you get a job, find a partner, or community then I’ve done my job! If you want to use the image as a press photo (something that you send to a website or magazine) or as part of something you sell like as a record cover, author image in a book etc. - I would love to see that happen so let’s talk about licensing! Definitely ask me if you intend to remove the pink background or use the image in some kind of advertisement. I don’t release unretouched images, but I’m open to editing more images from our session for a fee.
What do you charge?
I am happy to give every participant one web-sized digital image, free of charge, to use as described above. If you want more images from our session, I ask for a small donation that helps fund the project, but you’re free to make a donation at anytime! venmo: lauren-tabak
Can I get a portrait with my partner, family or co-founder?
Sure! I’m available for hire - dm for rates. At this moment I’m only looking to feature individual stories - but I might focus on queer couples or families further on down the road!
